The Democratic civil war took a divisive turn this past week over abortion. While Senator Bernie Sanders steadfastly support Nebraska politician Heath Mello, groups like NARAL and the Daily Kos pulled their support and vociferously attacked Mello.

As the New York Times’ Jonathan Martin wrote this weekend, the Mello saga reveals a deeper problem within the Democratic Party:

“But the ferocity of the dispute this time reveals a much deeper debate on the left: Should a commitment to economic justice be the party’s central and dominant appeal, or do candidates also have to display fealty to the Democrats’ cultural catechism?”
