Today, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam cast the tie-breaking vote to defeat a bill that would prohibit sanctuary cities in Virginia. This comes a little over a month after Northam announced his support for giving drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.

Northam’s vote is just the latest example of his dramatic move to the left. This vote clearly moves him far outside of the mainstream in Virginia. Earlier this week, a poll showed that 80 percent of Americans oppose sanctuary cities:

“A survey from Harvard–Harris Poll provided exclusively to The Hill found that 80 percent of voters say local authorities should have to comply with the law by reporting to federal agents the illegal immigrants they come into contact with.”

Recently, the Washington Post wrote that the Virginia Democratic primary is a battle “to be the most progressive.” Northam’s latest action protecting sanctuary cities shows that this race to the left is accelerating in Virginia.
