House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had a really bad week. Jon Ossoff’s huge loss deprived House Democrats of much needed momentum, and even worse have led to calls for her to step down as House Democratic leader. Things have gotten so bad for Pelosi that even her allies want nothing to do with her politically in their states:

“Even allies of Ms. Pelosi say they would be uneasy about her coming to their districts for public events, a practice she has largely given up as she has become such a focal point for Republican attacks. Representative John Yarmuth, Democrat of Kentucky, heaped praise on Ms. Pelosi’s leadership skills but demurred when asked if he would want her to go to Louisville. ‘Not at a rally,’ he said.”

Perhaps most worrying for Pelosi, at least a dozen House Democrats, including the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, met yesterday to talk about how they could replace her as leader:

“A dozen House Democrats huddled in the office of New York Rep. Kathleen Rice — an outspoken Pelosi critic — on Thursday afternoon, among them Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton and Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan. Most notable was the appearance of Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.”

Fortunately for Republicans, Pelosi has vowed to not go down without a fight. Yet as the New York Post editorial board wrote yesterday, as long as Pelosi is one of the faces of the Democratic Party, they will always be known as the party of coastal elites.
