During the 2016 Democratic presidential primary, socialist Senator Bernie Sanders (I-TV) established himself as one of the most left-wing extremists in politics. Given that, it takes something really out there to be farther to the left than Sanders. Yet that’s exactly what Montana Democratic Congressional candidate Rob Quist did yesterday on taxes.

Speaking at a town hall in Missoula, Quist called 90% tax rates “brilliant”:

“Quist said Dwight D. Eisenhower taxed the super-rich by 90 percent. ‘That sounds high, but it was brilliant,’ Quist said, adding that Eisenhower believed that the rich would just hold on to their money if it wasn’t taxed, but high tax rates would cause them to invest in businesses and infrastructure. ‘With all the tax cuts, it’s so low now that the rich are piling up their money,’ he said.”

During a Democratic primary debate, Sanders specifically said that his tax plan would not feature a tax rate as high as the 90% seen during Eisenhower’s time:

“‘Well, let’s get specific, how high would you go?’ CBS News moderator Nancy Cordes asked. ‘You’ve said before you’d go above 50 percent. How high?’ ‘We haven’t come up with an exact number yet, but it will not be as high as the number under Dwight D. Eisenhower, which was 90 percent,’ Sanders answered.”

Quist is more of a left-wing extremist on taxes than Bernie Sanders. That’s a recipe for disaster in Montana.
